Contractor lockout: verifying who actually holds the lock

Contractors do much of the riskiest maintenance work. How face-verified personal lockout makes sure every contractor is identified, inducted and trained before they get a lock.

Key takeaways

  • Contractors often do the highest-risk maintenance work, and are the hardest to verify.
  • On paper, a lock is issued to a name. Nobody checks that the name is the person.
  • Face-verified personal lockout checks identity, induction and training before a lock is issued.

The weakest link is identity

A contractor crew arrives for a shutdown. They have gate passes and have sat an induction. Then the locks are handed out against names on a list. Nobody checks that the person taking lock 06 is the person whose training is on file, or that they did not swap shifts with someone who has never been inducted.

Where paper contractor lockout breaks: the link between the person and the lock.

Face-verified personal lockout

Face matched ✓Identity verifiedSafety inductionTraining validLock 06 issuedNo match, no lock, no work.
Each contractor is verified at the shift tablet before a personal lock is issued against the permit.
  1. The contractor scans their face at the shift tablet.
  2. The system matches them to their record and checks induction and training validity.
  3. Only then is a personal lock or digital key issued against the permit.
  4. The lock-on, the work and the lock-off are all recorded against the verified person.

What it changes

  • No proxy locking: the person who locks is the person who was verified.
  • No expired training: lapsed certificates block the lock, not the audit.
  • Clear responsibility: the host plant and the contractor share one record.

A world first

DELTAFOUR® built the world’s first facial-authentication-based personal lockout for contractor work, running on the shift tablet alongside Smart LOTO® and Digital PTW. See it on the Smart LOTO® page.

Frequently asked questions

Why do contractors need extra verification for LOTO?

Contractors change often, work across sites and are hard to track on paper. Verifying identity and training at the moment a lock is issued closes the biggest gap.

Does face verification replace induction?

No. It checks that the person in front of the tablet is the person who completed the induction and training.

What happens if a contractor fails verification?

No match means no lock and no work. The supervisor is alerted to resolve it.
