Why the try-out step gets skipped, and how to make it stick

Try-out, or verifying zero energy, is the step that proves an isolation worked. Why crews skip it, what it costs, and how to make it impossible to skip without slowing the job.

Key takeaways

  • Try-out is the verification step: proving zero energy before anyone touches the equipment.
  • It gets skipped under time pressure, when equipment is “obviously off”, and when nobody checks.
  • Make it a gate: no recorded zero-energy check, no start of work.

What try-out means

Lockout-Tagout-Tryout is the full name many plants use for a reason. After the locks are on and stored energy is released, someone must prove the isolation worked: press the start button, operate the local control, or test with a meter. Only then can work begin. The OSHA energy control standard calls this verification of isolation.

Try-out is the proof step: start attempt or meter reading at zero, captured before work begins.

Why it gets skipped

  • Time pressure. The job is late and the crew is already waiting.
  • “It’s obviously off.” The motor is silent, so the check feels pointless.
  • Wrong isolation point. Without a clear link between point and equipment, people test the wrong thing, or nothing.
  • Nobody looks. On paper, a tick at the right time looks exactly like a real test.

What skipping it costs

Isolating the wrong breaker, a valve that doesn’t fully seat, a second feed nobody knew about: try-out is the step that catches every one of these. When it is skipped, the first test of the isolation is the person’s hands on the equipment.

How to make it stick

  1. Confirm the point. Scan an industrial QR tag at the isolation point so the crew knows they are at the right one.
  2. Make it a gate. The permit should not move to “work in progress” until zero energy is recorded.
  3. Record what was done. Start attempt, meter reading or both, against the person and the time.
  4. Review the exceptions. AI agents such as SENTRY™ can flag permits where verification was missing or rushed.

Frequently asked questions

Is try-out the same as verification?

Yes. Try-out is the shop-floor name for verifying that the equipment is isolated and at zero energy before work starts.

Who should perform the try-out?

An authorised person on the job, after locks are applied and stored energy is released, following the site’s procedure.

Can software enforce try-out?

Software can make the permit unable to move to work-in-progress until a zero-energy check is recorded, which turns try-out into a gate rather than a tick.
